Merrill Area Public Schools offers a four-year-old pre-kindergarten program for all children who are four years old by September 1 of the school year and live in the school district or have open-enrolled into the MAPS school district. Participation in this program is voluntary and there is no charge. The program is a half day program and offered in both the morning and afternoon. MAPS has partnered with community agencies to provide some of the pre-kindergarten services to minimize transitions and improve efficiencies. Some of these community agencies are religious based centers but no religious instruction will take place in the pre-kindergarten classroom.
Transportation is provided at no charge. MAPS may need to designate both the site and the session that the student attends as the transportation routes are coordinated with the MAPS transportation system.
A research-based curriculum is implemented by a DPI licensed teacher in each of the pre-kindergarten classrooms. The Creative Curriculum uses an integrated approach to address early language, literacy, math, social studies, science and motor development. Skills are taught through a learning center approach that focuses on facilitation of play skills and developmentally appropriate experiences for preschool students. In addition, the Creative Curriculum addresses social-emotional development and focuses on the essential skills of problem solving, emotion management, impulse control and empathy. Parent and family activities are also offered by the program.
Day-care and other services may be offered by the MAPS Pre-Kindergarten Community Partners. These are offered through the centers and are not part of the MAPS pre-kindergarten program. There may be additional fees for these services which will be collected by the centers. Parents who wish to purchase extended child-care and other services in addition to the MAPS pre-kindergarten program should apply directly at the participating center of their choice so they understand the full range of services the center offers. Parents who want their students to only participate in the MAPS pre-kindergarten program may complete an enrollment form with a list of their choices for center locations. Enrollment forms may be found on the Pine River School for Young Learners webpage, at Pine River School for Young Learners, at MAPS Central Office, at any of the MAPS Pre-Kindergarten Community Partners or call 715-536-2393 and we will mail an enrollment form to you.
