Northern Achievement Center
The Merrill Area Public Schools (MAPS) Northern Achievement Center (NAC) is a program designed to help all students who have been identified through the IEP process and are continuing to experience significant behavioral, social, and academic difficulties. This program is provided through Merrill Area Public Schools (MAPS) and, as space allows, a joint effort between participating school districts. The MAPS NAC is a transition program designed to return students to their home school placement/district and least restrictive environment, and/or provide an educational placement that will allow the student to achieve behavioral, academic, and social success.
PROGRAM GOALS
Students attending the MAPS NAC receive services in academics, community involvement, employability skills, and individual issues. Once program goals for students have been established, these goals help to shape and maintain individual and program direction.
PROGRAM SEQUENCE
REFERRAL: Students are admitted to MAPS NAC after the referral process and IEP placement from their home school. This referral is made based on the student’s lack of success academically, socially, and/or behaviorally and after a continuum of services have been provided within the traditional school environment. There are many considerations and placement options IEP teams can and should consider prior to a restrictive placement consideration of NAC. Typically, students are referred following a) placement at a treatment facility/program as a transition program back to their home school, b) a significant event that prompts a change of placement, and/or c) a series of attempted interventions.
Should there be further questions regarding NAC programming opportunities, the LEA from the IEP team should contact MAPS Director of Pupil Services/Special Education as a first contact.
